2023 - TenneT – LanWin 1, 2 GW Offshore Wind Farm, Netherlands
Summary
The LanWin 1 offshore wind farm is part of TenneT’s offshore grid expansion program, aiming to integrate large-scale offshore wind energy into the European power network. The 2 GW project involves the design and installation of HVDC converter platforms and subsea transmission cables.
Challanges
Managing system availability under offshore operational constraints, including weatherrelated downtime and equipment accessibility. Ensuring redundancy in electrical systems to mitigate failures and sustain high-capacity power transmission. Establishing a risk-based maintenance strategy that balances operational costs with reliability.
Solution
Developed RAM models to evaluate different maintenance and redundancy configurations, optimizing system uptime.
Implemented Reliability Block Diagrams (RBDs) and Monte Carlo simulations to assess potential failure scenarios and their impact on grid stability.
Designed condition-based maintenance plans utilizing IoT-enabled asset monitoring to detect performance degradation early.
Conducted FMECA workshops, identifying critical components and failure points that required design improvements.
