2025 - TenneT – IJmuiden Ver Alpha, 2 GW Offshore Wind Farm, Netherlands
Summary
IJmuiden Ver Alpha is one of the four planned offshore grid connection systems in the Netherlands, designed to integrate offshore wind energy into the European electricity network. The 2 GW capacity makes it a key infrastructure project supporting renewable energy targets.
Challanges
Ensuring high power export reliability from offshore platforms to onshore substations. Addressing harsh offshore environmental conditions, which impact electrical and mechanical components. Developing an effective spare parts and logistics strategy to minimize maintenance-related downtime.
Solution
Conducted a comprehensive RAM study to evaluate system performance under different failure scenarios and operational constraints.
Applied fault tree analysis (FTA) and failure mode analysis (FMECA) to assess HVDC system vulnerabilities and recommend design improvements.
Developed an optimized spare parts strategy, ensuring rapid availability of critical components to reduce downtime.
Collaborated with TenneT and suppliers to align system reliability targets with ISO 14224 and IEC 61078 reliability standards.
